A day in the life of a web designer

Web designers play an important role in bringing a brand’s vision to life and getting their message across. Imaginative, creative and well-versed in technical elements mildly sums up their talent. But while most of their day may consist of design work, a typical day for a web designer entails more than, well, web design.

So, what does a day in the life of a web designer look like?

First…. Coffee
We all appreciate a good cup of coffee to kick-start our day, it’s essentially the antidote to those early morning woes. Coffee = functioning on a better level.

Planning
For a designer, failing to plan is planning to fail. Because they’re usually working on more than one project on a given day, they need to set time aside to plan their daily schedule.

Admin
It may not always be the most enjoyable task, but it’s one that needs to be factored into our daily schedules. Admin for a designer can range from client communication (emails, telephone calls) to paperwork such as status and progress reports.

Briefings
The scope of a project is outlined in briefing sessions, this can take place between a client and the designer or the designer and a project manager. This is where they’ll get insight into the requirements for each project, the goal as well as the deadline.

Designing
A large part of a web designer’s day is dedicated to design work. This is where they work their magic and piece the puzzle together to meet the client's needs. It is also the portion of their day that requires the most focus and attention to detail to ensure they’re producing fully functional websites.

Quiet time
In between all the chaos and craziness, quiet time is necessary for a designer. This helps them with any creative challenges they may be facing and is also an ideal time to think out new ideas and solutions. People have different preferences, so while some may enjoy listening to music during quiet time, reading a book or playing games may help others.

But more importantly, they’re human, and we all need a break, even if only for a few moments.

Research
Web design is a fast-paced industry that is constantly changing and evolving. This means designers have to keep up with all these changes and trends, not only to expand their knowledge but to also maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. And this helps web designers keep up or stay ahead of the competition.

Brainstorming
Getting together as a team and having brainstorming sessions allows you to think and see things from a different perspective. It’s also an opportunity to get feedback from your team, allows designers to creatively feed off one another and can have a positive impact on all other areas that a designer’s day typically consists of.
